I have always had pets myself. I love animals and haven't met one that doesn't like me. I have learned over the years never be overly aggressive as animals are much like people. They like to make up their own mind. Animals sense that I would never harm them,and we become friends which is important. I know when a animals is hungry, tired, or wants to play or walk. I have a small dog myself , and his name is Chipper. I don't want to sound to mushy, but he is like a child to me. I think it is fun to learn new animals and their traits. They all seem to have their own distinct personality.
