Pet Owner in Denver
I have a 1.5 year old miniature schnauzer named Laila who is sweet very playful and can be very smart. She is very well behaved inside the house as long as I keep the blinds closed so that she doesn't see any people outside. I have had dogs my whole life and this is my second miniature schnauzer. I have been through multiple dog training courses so I am familiar with training techniques and have used them to train this dog to some degree. The problem I have is as soon as I take her out of the house she snaps and immediately looks for any people or other dogs to bark at and lunge towards. Her bark is very loud and can be very high pitched and continuous without halting between barks. It doesn't sound like a normal dog barking. I am sure she has woken my neighbors on early morning walks and late night walks. I have tried to train Laila not to bark at people and other dogs using a variety of techniques. Firstly, I got Laila at 8 weeks old and as a puppy, she was trained to properly walk on the leash on my left side only. However, I accept responsibility for not socializing Laila well enough as a puppy. She has been trained to speak on command and to be quiet on command. She will not pay any attention to me when she sees a person or dog while outside. I have asked all my neighbors to please greet my dog. She calms down if people are friendly to her and loves to be greeted. She has never bitten anyone. But every single neighbor of mine avoids us when we are outside together. They often literally will stop and quickly turn away if they see me with my dog. It really bothers me that this is happening and I am finding myself resenting Laila for interfering with my social life. I have tried bringing treats on walks and using the command "quiet" but it only worked for a split second, she got her treat and went back to barking. I tried a citronella spray collar but she barked right through it. I reluctantly tried the shock collar and was amazed to see Laila take shocks over and over at any strength and continue to bark while yelping each time she got zapped. It was not a pretty sight! So that was another failed attempt. I started bringing her to doggy daycare hoping this would help socialize her. They tell me she plays great with the other dogs and they never heard her bark loudly or show any aggression at all. But when I pick her up and put the leash on her, she goes right back to her ugly behavior. I finally called some "professional" trainers to come help me but they want to charge outrageous prices. I figure these are my only options remaining. I can try even harsher punishments if she barks at people to shut her up, something I don't desire to do. I hire someone to help me at a fair price. Or I find her a new home, which I also do not desire to do. It's sad. She is great in the house. Trusted to have the run of the house since she was 4 months old and she never chews things up or has accidents. But I want to be able to take my dog for long walks and go to the park with her and meet people. This is sadly not possible now. Her behavior has been disruptive to the neighborhood, embarrassing and ruining any social life I try to build here in Denver. I just moved here 4 months ago and don't know anyone here...Laila is not exactly helping with this. Please respond if you are genuinely interested in helping, if you are qualified and willing to work with me on a fair price.
