My parents got married because they messed up their lives and put all of the love they had left into their dogs, and those two dogs ended up being the best of friends. I grew up with those two dogs along with five cats and a myriad of lizards, hamsters, rabbits, and rats. Animals have always made me feel less alone, even when everyone is gone. Milan Kundera once wrote, "given the nature of the human couple, the love of man and woman is a priori inferior to that which can exist (at least in the best instances) in the love between man and dog... It is a completely selfless love: Tereza did not want anything of Karenin; she did not ever ask him to love her back. Nor had she ever asked herself the questions that plague human couples: Does he love me? Does he love anyone more than me? Does he love me more than I love him?" I love animals because they will always love you more than you love them. I want to find ways to spend time with animals without owning one at this stage of my life where I cannot give a pet the respect and time it deserves, and I believe dog walking and pet sitting could be a great way to do that. Also, because I have just moved here two weeks ago from Baltimore, I do not know the city very well and getting time out and about with a dog would give me a chance to find out more about where I am.
