Ronald My beginning in special needs pet caretaking: A few years back, responding to what I thought was a simple dog sitting job, I had a forever life changing experience. I learned that the responsibilities and services required for Jazz, a 16 year old Terrier Pit-bull were far more serious than I could have imagined, and doubted whether I was even qualified. Jazz had recently been disabled and had a litany of medical issues. After the initial shock and doubt, I thought, “if not us, then who?” Working aside is his mom, Lauren we learned all that we could about Jazz’s unique situation, including paralysis, arthritis, medication, inducing bowel movement, and much more. We adapted massage techniques, and exercises to help with Jazz’s range of motion and changed his diet to include extra supplements. Jazz, after a few months on this personalized plan, was finally mobile again. Together with Jazz's mom we decided to bring in another caretaker to provide full around the clock care. After many interviews we brought in another new family member John; between John, Lauren(Mom) and Ron, Jazz’s quality of life improved dramatically--he was able to walk his favorite park and even over the bridge that leads to the east river. Jazz’s quality of life was exponentially enriched because of the devotion and love he was given, right up to his passing in 2016. The journey continues: Saddened but enriched by our experience with Jazz we sought new caretaking opportunities. As fate would have it, almost 30 days from the day Jazz passed I met Marissa(mom) and Pandora(Pet). Pandora is a 12 year old loving, super energized dachshund who was recently paralyzed from the waist down. Her mom expressed what a life altering and nearly shattering experience this was and how badly she needed a partner. Pandora alike Jazz needed to be expressed (bladder/urine) and helped with bowel movement. We were eager to help and over the last year we have become partners, client/caretaker, dear friends and truly part of one another's families. With the help of Eddie’s Wheels, Pandora, is back running her wheels over freshly shined shoes in the streets of NYC. We also take her through range of motion exercises, and water therapy. Pandora is the happiest girl who runs Central Park with wild abandon and let's no special need limit her zest for life.
