Cats and dogs and elephants if needed. When you're away, dogs will play. Cats will get lots of loving cuddles and scratched just right.
Why not let them have a break too. Lots of long walks with positive behavioral reinforcement. No crates (unless they so desire), couch or bed for sleeping. They will return to you clean, refreshed and exhausted. Just as if they had that break you've all been waiting for all year long.
