Pet Sitter in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

I'm an
Individual
In my 36 years of life, I know of only a small handful of years (when I was in college and graduate school) in which I did not have pet companions. From the earliest age, I learned from my parents to treat the dogs, cats, birds, fish, and even the neighborhood squirrels as parts of the family and community. Ours was a haven for animals, a sanctuary where - at the least - they would be loved, respected, fed, and sheltered. As an adult I learned first-hand the trauma that many of our pets go through while experiencing separation anxiety. Two of my pet companions were rescued from shelters - one as a 9-week old chi-weenie pup (Stan - now almost 6) and a 5-year old Basset Hound (Gaia, who lived to 15 healthy years!). Gaia knew the mean streets as a stray and then two prior owners before I rescued her from the shelter. Set in her ways, suspicious of everyone's intentions, often alone, and mischievous: we got along famously! Having been through true abandonment, she always seemed to have a mysterious anxiety tucked away somewhere in her brain - a worry that I just might not return home from work one day. Dutifully, she slept by the door to the garage until I returned home each day. We learned together how to help her find the comfort in knowing that she was not alone and would never be abandoned again. Stanley came along as Gaia was in her 12th year (old for a Basset, but still very energetic - as energetic as Bassets get anyway). Stanley and Gaia were polar opposites. She meandered around the yard sniffing, while he bounced around yipping. She cautiously, but methodically examined her food at every meal while inhaled it without chewing. She would walk up to other dogs like a casual neighbor (only to ignore them, passing by as if they didn't matter to her one bit) while he would bark at them from a distance, run a few circles like a real tough pup, then hide behind me if they got too close. These two were the odd couple, and they were inseparable. Then, Gaia, at a very happy old age of 15, passed. Stan struggled with this tremendously (as did I). Having been born at the shelter then adopted by me, he literally had never in his life been alone. Leaving for work each morning was a gut-wrenching thing. This was a new challenge we had to face together, without Gaia. Stanley is almost 6 now and is happy and healthy (except that he still inhales his food). Our pets are family. I love to help them find comfort in knowing that they are not alone and they are going to be cared for.
